Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Mental health awareness is an essential aspect of public health, yet it remains stigmatized in many parts of Nigeria, including Bida, Niger State. Traditional beliefs and lack of information about mental health conditions often lead to misconceptions and neglect of individuals suffering from mental illnesses. However, digital media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and specialized websites have become instrumental in raising awareness about mental health issues. These platforms provide a space for open discussion, sharing of resources, and support for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. According to research by Salihu et al. (2023), digital media campaigns have successfully increased mental health awareness, educated the public, and reduced stigma in other regions of Nigeria. This study seeks to explore the role of digital media in promoting mental health awareness in Bida, assessing how these platforms are being used to educate the public, support affected individuals, and challenge stigmatizing attitudes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing use of digital media in promoting health awareness, mental health remains a sensitive and often misunderstood issue in Bida, Niger State. There is limited research on how digital media can effectively raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health in the area. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the role of digital media in promoting mental health awareness and providing insight into the effectiveness of these efforts.
